Leggings with Hip Pads for Hip Dips
What Are Hip Pad Leggings?
Leggings with sewn-in or pocketed pads over the lateral hip area. Unlike shapewear shorts meant to be worn under clothing, these leggings are meant to be seen — they function as both clothing and contour-smoothing. Pads are typically foam or silicone and sit in internal pockets over the trochanteric depression.
Foam vs. Silicone in Leggings
- Foam pads: Thicker (0.5-1.0 inches), more dramatic visual effect. Best for creating a pronounced curve under loose clothing. Drawback: visible pad edge can show through the legging fabric if the foam is thick and the legging material is thin. Foam can also dent or flatten over time — each wash degrades it slightly.
- Silicone pads: Thinner (0.25-0.5 inches), more natural-looking. Best for subtle enhancement that passes close inspection. Drawback: heavier than foam, can pull the waistband down. Higher price point.
Key Features That Separate Good from Bad
- Pad pocket design: The pad must stay in place during movement. Internal silicone grip dots on the pad pocket help, but the pocket must also be the right depth and width for the pad. A pocket that is too shallow will let the pad ride up.
- Pad removal: Removable pads let you launder without degradation and swap pad sizes. Sewn-in pads cannot be removed and will degrade with washing.
- No visible pad edge: The single most important test. Put the legging on and look at the hip from the side in natural light. If you can see the pad outline, the legging fails.
What to Pay
Quality padded leggings start at $35 and go to $90. Budget options ($15-$30) almost always have visible pad edges under light. The $40-$60 range is the sweet spot with removable silicone pads and decent fabric.
